By Staff report
Clintwood's Ashley Rose was named the All-Lonesome Pine District Player of the Year on Sunday following a vote of the league's girls basketball coaches.
The senior guard led the Lady Green Wave to a 15-8 record, losing to eventual Group A state champion Gate City in the LPD semifinals.
Powell Valley's Kelly Smith was named LPD Coach of the Year after the Lady Vikings rebounded from a 7-16 finish in the 2004-05 season to go 12-12 this year.
Gate City, fresh off Saturday's 56-41 victory over previously undefeated Clarke County in the state title game, placed three players on the first team: Brittany Rogers, Haley Odle and Ashton Bishop.
J.J. Kelly, Powell Valley and Clintwood tied with two members each on the first team.
Kalen Collins and Brynn Hurst represented the Lady Indians; Whitney Seals and Jessie Shuler earned first-team honors for the Lady Vikings; and Kristen Mullins joined Rose on the elite squad for the Lady Green Wave.
Rounding out the first team were J.I. Burton's Kelli Lane, Coeburn's Ashley McConnell and Pound's Kayla Balthis.
Five J.J. Kelly girls were given honorable mention status to bring the total number of Lady Indians honored to seven, tops for the district.
